Hi there smart drivers, Rick with Smart Drive Test.
Another quick tip for road test smart – stopping behind other traffic in an urban area.
Stopping in Traffic
You have to stop behind other traffic so you have a clear sight of the vehicle in front – its tires making contact with the pavement.
As you can see here in the image, regardless of class of vehicle– motorcycle, car, light truck, class four vehicle, bus, or truck– you have to stop back far enough that you can see the tires of the vehicle in front of you making clear contact with the payment.
As you can see here in the image.
Drive Around
The reason for that is: is that you’re stopping back far enough–approximately one vehicle length–if the vehicle in front of you breaks down or you need to get around that vehicle for whatever reason, you don’t have to back up in traffic.

Because if you have to back up in traffic, that’s dangerous.
Especially on a road test.
If you put it in reverse on a road that goes forward, that’s an automatic fail.
So don’t do that.
You stop back far enough that you can move around the vehicle, if you need to in the event of an emergency or you need to change lanes, or that vehicle breaks down.
Rear-end Crash
As well, it’s a defensive position move.
Particularly in a car or light truck – you’re watching the vehicles coming up from behind.
If you see one coming up too fast and isn’t going to stop in time and may cause a rear-end collision.
That space in front of you is enough to pull forward that often times you can avoid that rear-end collision.
Conclusion
There’s a bunch of other reasons, but for the purposes of this video, I’m not going to go into them.
I’ll leave another video here.
I’ll put a card up for you for the complete list of reasons why you need to stop back far enough so that you can have clear sight of the tires making contact with the pavement.
This is an imperative technique that you have to have for a road test.
