Introduction
Hi there smart drivers, Rick with Smart Drive Test talking to you today about truck aprons at slip lanes. This is for big trucks – that truck apron is to use for two purposes: 1) it accommodates off-tracking of big trucks and it reduces your impediment to other traffic. We’ll be right back to give you some information about that. Stick around.
Hi there smart drivers, welcome back. Rick with Smart Drive Test talking about truck aprons at slip lanes. These are for right hand turning big trucks, larger vehicles– RV units and those types of things.

Truck Apron
This truck apron behind me here, you can see it’s coloured stamped concrete – it’s reinforced concrete. Unfortunately from a distance it looks like paving stone. As well, you can see the gutter running along there and the truck apron is slightly elevated. if you’re driving a car, or light truck don’t park on there. As you can see the car in the image here, because if a big truck comes around there and uses that truck apron, he or she’s probably going to run into you with the trailer, so don’t park on that truck apron.
Off-tracking
And as well – as I said it’s to accommodate the off-tracking of the semi-trailer coming around there, because the semi trailer tires take a shorter path than the steer axles on the semi-truck. So they’re going to go in closer and tighter in on the right-hand turn.
Reducing impediment to other traffic
As well, it allows big vehicles–large RVs, buses, and trucks and those types of things so that they don’t have to go out into the other lane when they’re turning right onto a multi-lane highway. It reduces their impediment to other traffic so they can stay on that inside right hand lane and turn the corner without venturing out into that other lane of traffic. That’s the purpose of the truck apron.
So if you’re driving a big truck and RV unit or a bus, use the truck apron when you’re coming around on the right-hand turn to accommodate the off-tracking and to reduce your impediment to other traffic. So in conclusion, truck aprons – they’re designed to accommodate off-tracking and to help bigger vehicles get around a slip lane on a right-hand turn.
As well, to reduce their impediment to other traffic when they’re turning and merging onto a multi-lane road. The design: their stamped, coloured concrete and they’re slightly raised to deter cars and light trucks from parking on them or using them. These are for larger vehicle – so make sure you use the truck apron. That way you can reduce your impediment to other traffic.
