For the purposes of a road test you must know a school crosswalk sign.

Introduction

Hi there smart drivers, Rick with Smart Drive Test talking to you today about the school crosswalk sign.

This will be within a school zone and the school zone will be designated by the school zone sign.

School crosswalk signs have 2 people on the sign, as opposed to one for regular crosswalks.

Differentiating a School Crosswalk Sign

What differentiates this sign from a regular crosswalk sign is the fact that there are two people on the sign.

And the way that I remember this in terms of school signs is: "When two vowels go walking, one does the talking."

And that's the way that I remember this—that little rhyme from when I was in elementary school.

So if there's two people on the sign it means it's a school crosswalk, if there's just one it's a regular crosswalk.

School Zones

So what that indicates to you as the driver is to be more attentive when school is in session.

So 8am to 5pm on school days and pay more attention and know that there's probably going to be pedestrians crossing the roadway.

As well, it will be accompanied by hash marks on the roadway, so look for the road markings as well to indicate where exactly the crossing is.

School signs are pentagon in shape.<p>In other words, they look like a house with a gable roof.

Regulatory Sign

As well, this is a rectangular sign with a white background and the symbols on it are black, therefore it is a regulatory sign and you must give the right away and yield to pedestrians and students in the crosswalk.

Finally, if there's a crossing guard at the crosswalk you must follow the directions of the crossing guard.

Make sure that you give one lane of space between you and the pedestrians before proceeding.

For the most part, regulatory signs are rectangular in shape, have a white background with black lettering and symbols.

And I'll put a card up here for you for that video on turning and pedestrians and proceeding at crosswalks.
