Introduction

Hi there smart drivers.

Talking to you today about how to reverse stall park between cones for the purposes of passing a road test.

 Stick around.

We'll be right back with that information.

 (upbeat music)

Hi there smart drivers, Rick with Smart Drive Test talking to you today about how to reverse stall park between cones for the purposes of passing a road test.

Now, I'll put the video up in the corner here for exercises that you can do to learn where your vehicle is in space and place.

Starting off in a parking lot with cones is the best and fastest way to learn to drive a vehicle.

And learn mastery of the primary controls, the steering wheel, the throttle, and the brake for those of you driving automatics.

For those of you driving manuals it'll also be clutch control, which will improve and the exercises in the learn to drive video plus this exercise of reverse stall parking between cones is going to improve your overall driving.

I encourage you to work with these slow-speed maneuvers, work with the exercises in the learn to drive video, and we'll make you a better driver faster.

So focus on these slow-speed maneuvers.

Do these not just for the purpose of passing the road test, but for the purposes of becoming a smarter, better driver, faster.

All right so this is a fairly easy exercise after you do all the other exercises.

Reverse stall parking is fairly easy.

 Let's get started.

All right so when you pull up to the cones here you wanna be about three feet away from the cones in the passenger side.

So we're doing this on the passenger side and it's gonna be a little tougher on the passenger side.

And then you wanna angle out away from the cones.

So into reverse, and we're gonna back up.

And we're gonna keep the cone tight to the passenger side.

We're not worry about the cone on either side.

We're gonna keep it tight to the passenger side.

And if you do the exercises in the learn to drive video you can do that as well, just place the cone out there and drive alongside of it and you can learn where your blind area is on the passenger side of the vehicle.

When beginning to park between the cones, start by reversing from the drivers side - it's easier to see.

So we just keep it tight and I've got the wheel turned all the way to the right.

And the cone is nice and tight to the vehicle.

And I can just quickly check here, but this cone is good on this side here.

And now we're straight between the cones and I've got the steering wheel turned all the way to the right so what I wanna do is I wanna bring the steering wheel back to straight.

And we know that the steering wheel turns one and a half turns to the left and to the right for maximum turn of the steering wheels.

So we just bring it back one and a half turns and we now know the steer tires are straight.

You can also move the vehicle a little bit and you'll know that your steer tires are straight.

 So we just back up.

We're in length, we're in line here with all the pylons and we can see the back one in there as well and we're good.

After practicing for a bit getting the vehicle between the cones, back from the passenger side to improve your skills.

We're outside of the wing mirror and we know that we're in between the pylons here.

We just back up until the nose of the vehicle is in line with the pylons.

So that's how you do it on the passenger side.

We're just gonna go around and we'll do it on the driver's side as well.

(bell dings) That way you'll get instant notifications when we get the videos up for you.

When backing a car, be sure to look out the back window for the duration that you're reversing.

So again, about three feet away.

And we kinda angle off on this direction here.

 Into reverse.

 And we stalled the vehicle.

(laughs) 'Cause I dump the clutch too much.

 Okay, and we come back.

And again, we keep this pylon tight on this side of the vehicle.

And we're probably gonna have to move forward here a little bit because we're not we don't have enough turning here.

So pull ahead, back into reverse, now we're good.

And as well, get used to using your mirrors because that's a critical skill for learning how to drive and lane changing.

If you can learn to use your mirrors here, it's gonna be a lot easier when you get out onto the roadway.

When working with the cones, use only the mirrors to learn this skill. When driving and changing lanes, this skill will improve your observation.

So get used to using your wing mirrors in conjunction with good observation techniques to back up.

And that's how you do it on both the driver's and the passenger's side for reverse stall parking between cones.

And it's just a matter of renting some of these pylons from your local rental shop.

They're inexpensive, probably about $10 for the day for four of them.

Just pick them up from your rental shop there and you can go to the parking lot and practice this.

 Practice your reversing.

And as I said, it will improve your overall driving and give you mastery of the primary controls and will also teach you where your vehicle is in space and place.
