Hi there smart drivers Rick with Smart Drive Test talking to you today about the step-by-step procedure for doing a right-hand turn for the purposes of a road test.
Just quickly, locate the turn – is it legal? Slow the vehicle and position the vehicle to the right; mirror, signal shoulder check approximately half a block from the turn.
You’re going to scan the intersection for other vehicles and road users, and fixed objects.
Determine whether it’s a yield sign, stop sign, or a traffic light.

Once you slow the vehicle and you determine that the way is clear – you’ve either come to a stop or slowed the vehicle – shoulder checked again – scan the intersection; turn the corner and look in the direction you want to go.
Recover the steering wheel, look up and accelerate into the path of travel.
So what we’re gonna do – we’re gonna hook up the cameras.
We’re going to go for a drive and I’ll show you how to do that step-by-step.

Practical Turning
Mirror, signal, shoulder check approximately half a block from the turn.
We’re moving to the right so nobody squeezes up beside me.
I’m stopping before the stop line.
It’s a stop sign, and I’m going to creep forward so I can see.
And I want to start turning the vehicle when the cross street gets at the post here on the right side of the vehicle.
Lots of shoulder checking.
Turning Right At Complex Intersection
OK, locating the turn – this one’s a bit tricky because there’s an intersection here and we’re gonna wait till we get through the intersection before we move into the turning lane and merge.
And we’re watching that vehicle in front.
And again we’re positioning to the right.
We’ve got pedestrians in the crosswalk, so we’re going to stop before the crosswalk– shoulder check–watching the cross traffic because they have the right-of-way.
So we’re going to pull in behind this vehicle and then we’re going to proceed…
We’re slowing to 10-20 kilometers an hour (8-12 miles per hour) and shoulder check before you cross the bike lane.
Stopping and making sure there’s nobody in the pedestrian crosswalk.
Moving forward – we have a yield sign so we don’t have to come to a complete stop.
Checking all the traffic, turning the vehicle, and recovering the steering wheel and accelerate into the path of travel.
Turning Right on Red Traffic Light
Mirror, signal, shoulder check [MOVING THE VEHICLE FORWARD] We stop at the STOP line, and then move up so I can see.
You can see the light is green and we’re going.
Right Turning Lane
Turning right, moving into the right-turn lane.
You have a traffic light and the way is clear.
Mirror, signal, shoulder check again.
And shoulder check immediately before turning right.
Right into your lane.
Conclusion
Quick review of right-hand turns.
You want to locate the turn – is it legal – can you make the turn?
Mirror, signal, shoulder check half a block before the turn.
You want to slow the vehicle and you want to position the vehicle to the right of your lane as far as possible.
If there’s a bicycle lane, do not move into the bicycle lane because there’s a solid white line there and you cannot cross over a solid white line.
So stay out of the bicycle lane.
Slow the vehicle to 10 to 15 kilometers an hour– for those you in the United States, 8 to 12 miles an hour – 15 miles per hour on the outside–so you have to slow the vehicle.
Determine what kind of intersection you’re up against, whether it’s a stop sign, a yield, or traffic light.
In many cases it’s going to be a traffic light.
If there’s a traffic light, there might be a right-hand turning lane.
Move up to the intersection, and stop in the correct position if you’re facing a stop sign or a red stoplight – before the stop line.
And as well scan the intersection, make sure it’s clear to go.
When it is clear to go, immediately before you turn, right shoulder check again.
Steer the vehicle around the corner and as I said you want to start turning the vehicle to the right when the post on the passenger side is in line with the cross street – that’s when you start to turn the vehicle.
Turn the vehicle around the corner, look in the path of travel, look up, and accelerate the vehicle with your right foot and assume highway speed.
Most of the time in the city that’s going to be 50 kilometers an hour – for those of you in the United States, it’ll be 30 miles per hour.
