observation.

It is one of the cornerstones of a road test:

1) observation;

2) communication;

3) speed management; and

4) space management are the four components.

And today we're going to talk to you about observation and why a student of mine yesterday, failed the class #4 road test.

Rick with Smart Drive Test talking to you today about observation and the reason that you will fail a road test.

Now you can see here in the dashcam that I am following a logging truck and it is difficult to see around that logging truck, particularly as I get closer to that logging truck.

What happened yesterday with my student was that he was making a left-hand turn at an intersection with an advanced screen-- the advanced green was a short light-- he was sitting behind the snow plow and the snow plow proceeded into the intersection.

The student simply followed the snow plow and couldn't see around it to see the traffic light.

And when the student entered the intersection the traffic light was red and if you enter an intersection on a red light it is an automatic fail.

Do NOT proceed into the intersection on a red light.

Subsequently the student failed the road test.

So know that that if you cannot see past the vehicle in front of you, or there's some other obstruction in the intersection that's blocking your view of the intersection, do not proceed into that intersection until you can see clearly the traffic lights.

You can see the vehicle, the big truck here in front of me, is actually moving over to the left there and merged...

and the reason the truck is moving over is because this lane narrows to one lane up here just a little bit.

So the lesson we learn about my student that was unsuccessful on the road test is that if your view is obstructed, do NOT proceed into the intersection.

Because you may find that when you proceed into the intersection you cannot see the traffic light, and you may enter on a red light.

Now had I followed that logging truck into the intersection there I would have gone in on a red light.

And on a road test, I would have been unsuccessful.

So don't do that!
